چکیده

T he cardiovascular system is the first organ system to form and function in the developing embryo. In the early stages the heart is a slow conducting, single tubular structure generating an even peristaltic contraction. During embryogenesis it then develops into a four chambered heart with synchronous contraction for a dual circulation. These synchronous contractions of the atrial and ventricular chambers are dependent on the development of high conduction velocities resulting in alternating slow and fast conducting segments. In the early embryonic heart tube, an ECG similar to that of an adult has been recorded. This indicates the electrical activity of sequentially activated heart chambers, so demonstrating the functioning of the cardiac conduction system (CCS), before any morphological development can be distinguished. Throughout the developmental process the heart must maintain its rhythmical contractions through coordinated activation of the myocardium. The components of this system include the sinoatrial (SA) node, the atrioventricular (AV) node, and the ventricular conduction pathway consisting of the bundle of His, the right bundle branch, the left bundle branch, and the Purkinje fibres.

Initial documented rhythm as a predictor of survivalto-discharge rate after in-hospital cardiac arrest in a tertiary care referral institute, South India: an observational study

Objective: Survival-to-discharge rates following in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) patients remain significantly low. The use of initial documented cardiac rhythm as predictor of Survival-to-discharge is still unclear. This study aimed to assess whether the initial documented rhythm can be used as a predictor of survival-to-discharge following IHCA in an emergency department of the tertiary car...

The controllability of cardiac rhythm in elderly

Introduction: Recent reports have shown that rare fluctuations in cardiac cycles are ‘forgotten’ quickly in healthy individuals and it is possible to quantify the “memory length” of a physiological time-series using an inverse statistical approach. Methods: In the present study, we assessed the effect of aging on memory length in cardiac rhythm. Results: There was a long...

A Study of Cerebral Performance Categories Based on Initial Rhythm and Resuscitation Time Following In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest in a State Hospital in Turkey

Background: The cerebral performance category (CPC) score is widely used in research and quality assurance to assess neurologic outcome following cardiac arrest. However, little is known about the results of the CPC in Turkey. Objective: This study aimed to determine whether the CPC is associated with the initial rhythm and resuscitation time following re...

Effects of age on the prevalence of cardiac dysrhythmias in ponies

This study describes the prevalence of cardiac dysrhythmias occurring over a single 24 h period in ponies and compares the heart rate and frequency of dysrhythmias in two groups of ponies of different ages. Electrocardiograms were recorded using a Holter monitoring system from twenty four ponies aged less than 15-year-old (n = 14) and greater than 15-year-old (n = 10). Subsequent analyses of ca...
